Food Obsessions Part 3

I know you have all been dying for this latest installment of my food obsession so here we go. This food obsession is all about Philly food. Yes, that is right folks food from Philadelphia. This was just going to be about Cheesesteaks but when I was in Philly I discovered another heavenly delight known as the Tastykake. So I decided to make it all one post about Philly food.

Again I have the food network to blame for my obsession with the Cheesesteak. I saw some show, probably Unwrapped, and saw what a real Cheesesteak looked like. Now, you can get cheesesteaks in MN, I have had them but once you have had a real cheesesteak from Philly, there is just no comparison. Here in MN we call them Philly Cheesesteaks, in Philly, it's just a cheesesteak. Remember this folks because apparently people from Philly don't like it when you refer to a cheesesteak as a Philly Cheesesteak.

So anyway, back to my obsession. I love steak, I love hoagie rolls and I love cheese. I needed a cheese steak. Believe it or not I actually researched where to go. The food network helped. I found that there are 3 main places in Philly to get a cheesesteak. One is Pat's, one is Geno's and one is Jim's on South Street. I consulted some of my message board friends about cheesesteaks and where to go and found that there was ordering protocol that needed to be followed. What?? Apparently at some places if you do not order correctly you are sent to the back of the line. I could not let this happen. I got schooled on how to order, Whiz wit, whiz witout. What is Whiz? Whiz is cheesewhiz. Wit means with onions, witout means without onions. Provy is Provolone. Now there is more to this than what I am explaining but it's been a while since I was in Philly so I'm sure I am leaving a few things out, I just wanted you to have an idea. I was so nervous about this ordering thing.

Once in Philly we had to decide where to go. We didn't have a car but ended up on South Street so Jim's it was. The place was mobbed and the line was long. I was actually practicing in line on how to order. (yeah, lame, I know). I didn't need to worry they were very nice when I ordered. No one was sent to the back of the line. I got my steaks and was in heaven. BEST FOOD EVER! I wanted to get back in line and get another one but I didn't. I seriously want to go back just to have a cheesesteak and yes, I have considered ordering the supplies from Jim's to make them at home. I haven't done it but I have thought about it. I may do it someday.

So about these Tastykakes yeah they are like Hostess only better! Lots of variety's and yummy cakey goodness. I have resorted to ordering Tastykakes from Ebay. I also have a friend at work who is from Philly who brings me some back when she goes home. I think it is probably good that we don't have Tastykakes in MN because it could be dangerous.

So there you have it. Tastykakes and Cheesesteaks. Are they worth it? Darn right they are!

This is hilarious. I've had a cheesesteak in Philly and found the whole Cheez Whiz thing hilarious. Especially since I learned it's just the name for the fake-cheese sauce, it's not the real branded Kraft cheez whiz. You know, the name broke down like Xerox/copies, Kleenex/tissues.

Loved your post Kristie! :)
